MEL RICE - STUDIO CERAMICA
Opened in 2016, STUDIO CERAMICA is one of SF's most soulful community pottery studios. This creative space is woman-owned & operated by a San Franciscan, Mexican artist. Mel Rice is a professional production potter, who trained in ceramics at San Francisco City College - Fort Mason Campus for over 8 years. STUDIO CERAMICA is a child of Fort Mason Campus and Mel runs this studio with the same foundation she was given by her teachers at SF City College. Mel's goal is to hand down this knowledge to the next generation of potters. Her studio is located in the heart of SF's "Little Russia" on Geary Boulevard between 25th Ave. & 26th Ave. With a large open workspace, multiple wheel-throwing spaces, a dedicated glazing porch, and a growing, vibrant backyard, there is always somewhere to settle in for a while and immerse yourself in pottery.
Whether you want to learn the craft of making functional pottery pieces for the home or you long to throw clay on a pottery wheel just like Patrick Swayze & Demi Moore in the movie Ghost, we invite you to join a great community of creative people at Mel Rice - STUDIO CERAMICA. Our packages are made for beginners, intermediate, or pro potters. Each student will receive 18 pounds of clay, unlimited student access to the studio, and all of our food-safe glazes and slips, and firings are included. There's no limit on how much a student can make in class, so the sky's the limit on crafting your dream piece. Throughout a class package, students are able to come in to practice, create, and receive guidance from our helpful community during the large range of student studio hours. Students can also purchase additional clay at the studio from our selection of 12 different clay bodies. All of our glazes, slips, and engobes used are made the old school way from scratch in our chemical lab downstairs and we also have a full clay recycling system in place at STUDIO CERAMICA. We pug and recycle all our clay! It is madness, but we do it!
Owner Mel, as well as instructors Jay, Vincent, and Tiffany can all be found around the studio on various days. Each instructor has a unique style and passion for clay and spreading knowledge. Our friendly staff and experienced members can often answer your questions too. All skill levels are welcome at STUDIO CERAMICA. During class, more experienced potters can usually flow at their own pace, and our instructors can help any student, beginner, intermediate, or advanced, develop skills and good practices. Even those who have never touched clay before will walk away from their class with handcrafted pottery and a greater understanding of this time-honored art. Students will be able to MAKE-UP instructional classes if MISSED! Students can make up classes during their package or are able to make up missed classes up to two weeks after the last day of class. Once students have taken a class package, membership is offered and there a plenty of perks to becoming a studio member.
Membership NOTE: Studio hours differ and are much longer for members of the studio. Once a class package has been completed, membership is offered. If an experienced potter is wanting to become a member, they can run at their own pace within their package while getting acquainted with the studio rules and flow. After the end of the course, students who become members will be given locker space, individual shelf space, additional privileges, and expanded studio hours so that they can use the studio to grow their craft.
REFUND POLICY: We have a strict no-refund policy. Missed classes can be made up during or after course completion. Once you have started a class, the studio offers the ability to make-up classes during your course (or up to 2 weeks after the course ends) if classes are missed. We will explain how to make up classes during day 1 of your package, as make-up is the student's responsibility. Missing the first day does not mean the entire package can be missed and then switch to a whole other class package. Students must attend the second or third class to begin "make up" classes. If a student misses the first day and never shows up for class ever, no refund is issued. Once you have started class, the studio offers make-up classes during the package or up to two weeks after its completion. Please email us with any questions. [email protected].

Teenagers 13+ are welcome to take classes at our studio!
